2025/2026 IOMMDWCS Overall Results after R3.

Following the event yesterday at Lincoln RSC we have now completed three of the five planned races in the series. With the next event scheduled for 15th February, again to be hosted at Lincoln RSC.

The MYA online race entry system is already open here: Members Area – Event Details

Leading the pack with 120 points is Tim Hand who has sailed the three events and completed all 39 races in the series so far. In fact, the top four skippers have sailed all 39 races available to date. Second is Rob Wilson, a previous series winner on 140 points and there is a tie for third place between Pete Walters and Darin Ballington on 164 points. The tie break going to Pete because of his lower discard total and slightly better sailing average.

We have had 36 different skippers’ representing 14 different clubs from all over the country in the series so far. The clubs outside the Midland District have a white fill to their  club cell and the Midland District clubs all have their own fill colour so you can easily see where your club mates are ranked. Each round of the IOMMDWCS is a District “Open” and eligibility to score points in this competition is only open to skippers who are in good standing with the MYA, and only skippers registered with a MYA Midland District club are eligible to win the Champion Skipper series.

Let me explain a little about how the series is scored. The system we are using is MVSRS v1, that stands for Multi Venue Single Race System, this has evolved from several ideas that the Midland District had been developing for the IOM Midland District Champion Skipper Series, and this version has been in use for both the Summer and Winter series since March 2018.

The Champion Skipper Series is run over several events which can be hosted by different clubs, and their event race scores are combined to give an overall skipper ranking position after discards.

We  also wanted a system that would encourage event participation and reward the efforts of the race committee. The PRO is given points equal to second place in every race that they officiate at; this is so that each host club is encouraged to provide the PRO.

There is also a Champion Club element  in the  summer series, this is based on the best 4 skippers from each club scoring points for their team at each event, again encouraging participation of the club skipper as their efforts can count towards the club event total.

We have set the number of race discards in a series at 20% of the total races sailed in the series, and these can come from the skipper’s worst scores from any event.

MVSRS is currently structured for a maximum of 90 skippers, and  a maximum of 120 races in a series.

The Club element can handle 15 Clubs racing at 6 different venues in a series.

So long as you use the RRS A4 “Low Points System” such as HMS, or Sailwave for example for your event scoring there is nothing more to do. You just run the event as normal and declare a winner on the day.

Then after the event just send a copy of the full results with places for every skipper in every race to the series trustee who will then transfer them into the MVSRS  Workbook and it will calculate the series scores, allocate discards, and rank the skippers in the series.

An example of the current Excel Workbook is below.

It is effectively like a large version of HMS where you can miss an event in the series at any point, you just happen to score DNS in the grey boxes for the races you did not sail in.

The discards are dynamic and re-assigned after each event, so for instance you could have 2 from your first event and three from the last event. It always allocates the highest in the whole series, including allowing you to discard up to a maximum of ten DNSs, that is why there is a DNS Total column in the “Summary sheet” which is much easier to read on a smaller screen.

Thanks to Lincoln RSC for providing the results so quickly, it has allowed the series standings to be made available promptly.
