Rob McIntosh – Introduction as IOM Class Captain

I am delighted to say that I am looking forward to working with all UK IOM skippers as I take on the role of IOM Class Captain.

A little about me: I was born and raised in Birkenhead and discovered Birkenhead Radio Sailing Club at the age of 11. I started racing with a club boat and was fortunate to have Housemartin Sails nearby. Martin and Andrea took me under their wing, and throughout my teenage years, you would often find me in their workshop, learning and developing my knowledge of the sport.

As life moved on, I stepped away from sailing to focus on growing my family. In 2024, I returned to the sport and have since travelled to many of the major IOM events, including spending nine days on a RIB supporting the IOM World Championship in 2026.

Since returning, I have been fortunate enough to sail week in, week out alongside some of the best skippers in the UK at Birkenhead, as well as competing at many open meetings around the country. Racing against and learning from such talented sailors has helped me develop both as a competitor and as a member of the wider IOM community.

As Class Captain, I will do my very best to support and grow the class. Over the coming months, I will be working closely with each district to help arrange the ranking events and National Championships for 2027 and 2028. My aim is to help clubs build their IOM fleets and raise the standard of sailing across all levels, from social club racing through to the highest levels of competition. I want to encourage participation, development, and enjoyment of the class for everyone involved.

Most importantly, I believe that communication is key. I want to hear from skippers, clubs, race officers, and volunteers across the country. By working together, sharing ideas, and maintaining open dialogue, we can continue to strengthen and grow the UK IOM community.

I am always happy to hear from fellow skippers, whether you have ideas, questions, concerns, or simply want to discuss the class. Please feel free to get in touch by email, WhatsApp, or phone call. Open communication is important to me, and I want to ensure that every skipper feels they have a voice within the class.

All my details can be found in the members area of the MYA website as well. Or use the contact form here and select me from the dropdown.

I am excited for the future and look forward to working with you all.
