Vane M Class 2017 National Championship Report



The Race Officer’s briefing commenced at 10-00 hrs Saturday 28th October, followed by start of racing. The wind was westerly, initially around 20 mph. The fleet was a mixture of 5 modern designs and 2 Classic / Vintage yachts. Skippers of the modern yachts started in C rig and the older yachts in their 2nd suits. During the first heat the mast of the oldest yacht snapped at deck level and was taken in for repairs. During the second heat the wind strength increased, so an early lunch break was taken so that skippers could change sails and do minor repairs.

Racing after lunch continued with some yachts in C2 and others in C3 rigs. Towards mid afternoon the wind strength further increased to around 30 mph gusting up to 40 mph, so those in C2 moved down to C3 rigs. The first round was completed by 4-00 pm, so racing was stopped. Top scorer for the day was Robert Bell, sailing “Pixel”, designed by Fleetwood member, John Taylor. Further repairs were carried out by some skippers in preparation for a restart on the Sunday morning.

On Saturday evening most of the competitors met for a meal and drinks in the North Euston Hotel and a pleasant time was had by all.

On Sunday morning competitors were greeted by sunshine and reduced wind strength down to around 10 – 12 mph, so most started in C rig. The wind had changed direction from the previous day and was now blowing from the East, the Clubhouse end of the lake. After lunch the wind dropped further with some yachts now sailing in B or even A rig. Round 2 was completed by around 2-45 pm. Robert Bell finished with 40 points and Eddie Greenwood and Peter Whiteside both with 38 points, but Peter had a resail for 2 points, which he subsequently won, making him equal with Robert. A sail off was therefore necessary, with Robert winning both beats and so winning the Championship. He also won the Commodore’s Cup as overall winner and the Northern District Championship for highest score on day 1.

Peter was therefore 2nd and Eddie Greenwood in 3rd received the Model Maker Trophy for the highest placed skipper who has not won a MYA National Championship, and the Clapham Cup for the highest score on day 2 of the event.

Alan Oxlade won the trophy for the highest placed Classic / Vintage yacht, a former Fleetwood yacht built to Dick Priest’s Witchcraft design, by well-known Fleetwood member, Jack Roberts, originally named Ballerina, but now called Mariette.

The Team of Two (TOTS) prizes went to Damian Ackroyd and Eddie Greenwood.

Throughout the event the standard of sportsmanship was high, with skippers disqualifying themselves if they had made a rule infringement. There were no protests. The skippers were grateful to the MYA President, Derek Priestley and other Fleetwood members who had acted as Mates, with up to 7 of them on the Mates bank most of the competition. They were also grateful to David and Robert Bell for providing materials and expertise in repairing damaged yachts to keep the fleet sailing. Race Officer Eric Watkinson Fleetwood MY&PBC
