R6M District Championships – Paisley – 17th September 2006
Report by David Smith
Seven competitors, all from Paisley MYC, arrived hopefully on Sunday 17th September ready for some exciting action. Unfortunately the weather had other ideas. It was apparent there was rain in the air, although it wasn’t raining, and there was hardly any wind. A short course was set up at the southern end of the pond. These conditions would be expected to favour Robert Rooney but it was John Mathieson who was in the lead after three races. However, Robert was never far away.
The wind never amounted to much but Robert Rooney eventually found some form to win three races in a row. John Mathieson slipped back to third in three races while David Loomes crept past him with three races in second place. There was close racing throughout the fleet and every position won or lost was hard fought.
Lunch was taken with the expectation of renewing the contest in a stronger and less frustrating wind but it was not to be. After Lunch it took 25 minutes for the fleet to drift from the launching point at the northern end of the Pond to the starting line at the southern end. The wind showed no sign of returning and the thought of racing in these conditions was laughable. By agreement among the competitors the racing was brought to an early conclusion.
In the end after only 6 races, Robert Rooney came out the clear winner with David Loomes pipping John Mathieson to second place. The other finishers were David Smith fourth, John Gilchrist fifth, John Mason sixth and, newcomer to R6m racing, Jerry Crawford seventh.
Robert Rooney acted as a sailing Race Officer in view of the small number of competitors.
