North East Clubs 2007 Late Series Summary report

A total of 17 skippers took part in the three event winter series held over October to December 2007 at the North East Clubs of Brechin, Aberdeen and Buchanness.

This is the best participation since the winter series started back in 2005 and it is encouraging to see that 12 skippers competed in two out of three events.

The series is not only increasing in popularity but the standard of racing and race management is also progressing. Opportunity was taken to give experience to club members in RO duties, scoring and course setting. Further trials were carried out over the series to refine the use of starting advantages, the appointment of race observers and the timing of breaks between races. The useful experience gained will hopefully be carried over into the Scottish Traveller Series next summer.

All three events in this series were characterised by quality racing which was both keenly and fairly contested. There were many different wind conditions and challenging courses but surprisingly for this time of year the weather for each event was pleasant.

The worthy winner of the series was Ali Law from Buchanness who won the Brechin and Aberdeen events and has retained the North East Clubs Quaich trophy. He was followed a point behind by Ian Dundas. Steve Taylor finished third sailing a Bantock designed wooden Zig Zag. Neil Jardine and Ralph Knowles had to be split on countback for 4th and 5th places while Shakey was rewarded for his improved sailing with 6th place overall. It was good to see that all 3 clubs had two skippers in the top six.
