North East Clubs 2006 Late Series Event 2 – Aberdeen – 18th November 2006

There was a good turnout of 11 skippers at the second event in the North East Clubs Winter Series held at Aberdeen. There were 4 skippers from Buchanness and 2 from Brechin joining the 5 local skippers.

The high winds of the previous day had calmed to light No 1 rig conditions and the level in the reservoir was down about a meter. Due to some weed in the area of the course that was already in place along the North shore, an attempt was made to move the course over to the south side. However, because the north shore course suited the wind direction, eventually racing got under way along the north bank with the area of weed marked with a buoy.

6 races were run in the morning in very light winds. Ali Law with his Topiko won 3 in this first period and was out in front of the Stealths of Ian and Jimmy who won one each. Mel from Brechin also picked up a win with his Italiko in this first period. Colin Tait who had been away on bigger boat duties all season came back with some good finishes sailing off scratch and John Owens was also showing at the front with his Stealth. After a couple of races, handicaps were adjusted to equalise the competition in the difficult light conditions.

Following lunch, 9 races were run before facing fading light at 15h30. The wind had strengthened in the afternoon session allowing Colin Deakon – a new member from Buchanness – to keep his TS2 at the front getting 4 wins. Ian got into the groove and picked up the other 5 races in the afternoon and won the day overall. Ali had a bad run in the afternoon twice tacking into the weed patch and was also involved in incidents at marks but did enough to hold second ahead of Jimmy. Colin D’s efforts in the afternoon pulled him through to 4th on count back from John Owen who fell back with some rig problems at the end of the day. Shaky came in 6th with a good run of results but had to leave early and missed the last 2 races.
