IOM Scottish Travellers Event 3 – Brechin -16th June 2007

Report by Mel Percival (RO)

Score Sheet

Brechin were very lucky with the weather missing the forecast heavy rain, the 13 competitors only having to endure a short period of rain/drizzle. Unusually the northerly wind was very consistent in direction, which allowed a long beat up the entire weed free pond. The first twelve races being on “B” rig before the wind moderated slightly, and all competitors changed up to “A”. We had a few retrials mainly due to breakdowns, but some of the older competitors were struggling by the start of the last race at 15.55 hours, unfortunately we lost Brechin’s faithful Jimmy Rodger early on.
The few calls for redress are noted in the results, as are the two tiebreaks required due to the very close racing. All the boats with the 30 second starting advantage being promoted after two wins.

Congratulations to Ian, Alistair and John who were 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively, the scratch boats working extremely hard at the beginning of the event to beat the 30 second advantaged boats. However their placing became much better as the advantages were gradually whittled away.

To encourage the concept of fair sailing, plus recognise any notable improvement etc. by a newcomer to the sport, the race committee introduced an additional award, which had the same value as first place. It was named after Garry Lineker, the footballer and TV presenter, who throughout his entire playing career never once received a yellow card. He became the FA’s second highest scorer with superb positioning as he waited for a pass.

Although there were contenders from all the clubs attending, the Garry Lineker prize was awarded by the Race Committee to Hugh Shields for outstanding sportsmanship. Hugh had a few problems in the latter stages but was always polite and gentlemanly, despite his back discomfort.

I am happy to report that overall the event was successful, sporting and very enjoyable.
