October 30, 20223 yr And there's me thinking it was an individual sport, only kidding Lester. The live coverage of the event is some of the best I have seen, tune in and watch.
October 31, 20223 yr Super location and weather - wish I was there! The course seems to be a there and back racetrack. Perhaps they are limited by the wind direction. As a newcomer who has only ever raced at Club level I find it rather puzzling that the races get stretched out almost immediately. I would have thought that the races would be much closer as the competitors are the cream of of the sport. Also there appears to be quite bit of leniency regarding touching the mark. Comments from experienced skippers would be helpful.
November 1, 20223 yr Race 4- Heat A 3.07 minute's into the race RED boat completely missed a spreader mark and doesn't get a penalty I wonder if the boat got a disqualification at the end of the race..
November 1, 20223 yr This was pointed out to the skipper that evening with the video, he then approached the race committee as he wanted to retire from the race but as the scores had already been done and subsequent races sailed he put his boat in the water for the next S fleet race, started then immediately retired. Great piece of sportsmanship from a boat in the top 15 at the time. Well done Chris, GBR 21

November 2, 20223 yr Yes, absolutely nothing except to the fashion followers in the class. Just watched 8A and first, second and third were all sailing boats designed 12years ago. BritPOP!
November 3, 20223 yr I'm not blaming the skippers it's probably as usual that it seems to be at most events the marks are too far away, I know it's drone footage but there's incident after incident at the spreader marks that are not getting picked up by the judges that would be effecting the scores especially in A fleet.
November 3, 20223 yr Could someone explain please why one of the competitors was disqualified at the start of one of the races yesterday? What is the difference between being black flagged and just being required to return to the start line?
November 3, 20223 yr You can only be 'black flagged' if R30.4 is in effect. If it is in effect, then you are not allowed in the 'forward triangle' during the last minute. So cross the line and you are DSQd automatically. You may find the article on my web site Chapter 2 Starts, especially from Page 7 Starting Signals https://sites.google.com/site/johnsrcsailingrulesandtactics/ John Edited November 3, 20223 yr by John Ball added link to article

This is among the reasons why I think we need to look at the use of on-board cameras either as an aid to skippers or for monitoring rule adherence.
November 3, 20223 yr John Ball - thanks for the link - good reading. I think what has happened in the case I was looking at was that a recall of the whole fleet had occurred so the officials invoked the black flag to discipline the next start. In a later A fleet race today there was a bout 4 restarts and the black flag was invoked but there were so many breaking the line no-one was disqualified.
November 25, 20223 yr Have been looking for any reports from the IOM World championship. I did find some drone films on U tube; which were nice to look at. The IOMICA site has absolutely nothing at all. Details of boat designs and particularly any details of interesting boat set ups. Tactics employed for local conditions etc. Some pics would be useful too. Can learn so much from these competitive sailors. Richard
November 26, 20223 yr Richard Try this link. You should be able to view video from each day. https://2022iomworlds.com/
November 26, 20223 yr Hi Eric and thanks for that. That was the same link I referred to for U tube drone videos. I found it by accident ! What I was looking for was the usual report of championships. Specifics of individual performances, interesting boat set ups with pics etc. A lot of effort must have gone into the videos, however and are much appreciated. Also the organisation of the event. Seems a shame that all that effort does not get a mention on the IOMICA site or even a link to the video. Richard
November 27, 20223 yr Hi Richard, if you go to IOMICA website, in events section you will find a link to 2022 WC website noted above. But you are right, it could be more obvious on homepage. Regarding the report you ask for, it's not "usual" to get it on Iomica website. Maybe someone has pictures and notes, we would be happy to share such a report on IOMICA website.
November 28, 20223 yr Thank you Olivier; found it as you said. Obscure indeed for what is supposed to be the major event for the class. I did as you advised and found the web site gently listed amongst the text. Contains the aforementioned videos and a list of the results - hooray ! The link is: 2022iomworlds.com Maybe your comment could provoke someone to write a report. Richard
