Eight Bells, John Shorrock

John succumbed to his battle with Cancer on Tuesday 21st March 2023, he will be missed by all his sailing colleagues as he passes over the horizon to new waters.

He started his lifelong passion with sailing when he was in his late teens, sailing first an Enterprise in the Northwest and later Nationally. This was followed with successes in the National 12 and Merlin Rocket classes before he moved into a J24, and then an X99, in which he made his first appearance at Cork Week. This was followed by a Sigma 38 with which he had considerable success as Helmsman and Boat Boss and this was crowned by winning a Cork Week both in Class and Overall, from this as prize they got a trip to New Zealand. During this time there was also chartered race yachts, however his deafness and non- waterproof hearing aids finished his big boat sailing and started his love of Radio Sailing.

Starting with an International One Metre at Reading and followed by various Marbleheads. For many years he was a regular at Ranking and Nationals, as well as competing at two World Championships, and always accompanied by his wife Rita.

John was a founder member of Datchet Water Radio Sailing Club and was the treasurer for the club until just a few weeks ago. Increasing age and the onset of cancer meant he focused his last few active years on club sailing at Datchet. In his final year his latest IOM came from Spain in time for him to fit it out and sail several times before the advancing cancer made visits to the club too difficult. Throughout his life John was incredibly supportive of others and always willing to share knowledge and help newcomers to the sport.

We miss you John.
