10 Rater Tankard Open and Marblehead GAMES 3 – 19th March 2025 – Report & Results

Frensham Pond Sailing Club Radio Sailing Group

When the Race Officer arrived at the Club at 8:00 a.m., there was no sign of wind, and the forecast of a gentle SSE breeze was the worst possible from the point of view of the Club’s north-facing control area with tall trees behind. Nevertheless, an east-west windward-leeward course was set in hope.

By the time of the briefing a very light breeze from the West had developed and the first couple of races started East to West, but soon after that the wind switched to the East and fortunately held that way for most of the rest of the day.

With four 10R’s and ten Marbleheads entered, the decision was to start the Marbleheads first, followed by the 10R’s a Minute or so later.

After four races, Woking’s Roger Pearce on three bullets and a discarded 5th, led the 10R’s, followed by the Frensham three – Peter Mitchell on 6 points, Keith Parrott on 7 and John Millward on 8. Phil Holliday (Datchet) led the Marbleheads on 3 points, followed by Paul Tickner (Frensham) on 7, Graham Hetem (Datchet) on 8 and Nigel Barrow (Datchet) on 9. The three Datchet skippers were sailing F6’s.

After 8 races, Roger continued to lead the 10R’s on 7 points, followed by Peter on 12, John on 14 and Keith on 27 . Phil continued to lead the Marbleheads on 9 points, followed by Paul on 14, Nigel on 16 and Barrie Martin (LMYC) on 21.5.

The East wind held until around 2:00 p.m. but then shifted more southerly as forecast, which then turned the racing into a bit of a lottery with beats turning into reaches or runs and then exactly the same again after rounding the mark. Note for the future – stick to the laid course – it is the same for everyone.

Altogether 13 races were sailed. Roger Pearce on 12 points won the 10 Rater Tankard with John Millward second on 25 and Peter Mitchell a close third on 27. Phil Holliday on 19.7 points won the

Marblehead GAMES 3, followed by Nigel Barrow on 26, Paul Tickner on 31 and Barrie Martin on 42.5.
