Sailing
The district actively sails th following classes: IOM, RM, DF65, DF85amd 6M. Reports and results are placed on the ED Website for information to ED members.
The following also supposedly sailed in the district: 36”, A class, RG65 and Footy. Unfortunately race reports and results are never submitted to the website and consequently no information is passed on to ED members. Could I respectfully remind Club Reps that part of your is to keep your Club and ED members informed of the activities in your Club.
International one Metre
A total of 28 skippers took part in the EDCS series, racing at different clubs. These were Coalhouse Fort, Huntingdon, The Broads, Chelmsford and Norwich. Although an improvement on 2022, we still have a long way to go to catch up with the figure of 40 skippers in 2019. Once again, the event was won by Colin Goodman.
Dragon Flite 95 and Dragon Force 65
The new DF95 and DF65 District series were a great success. There were 5 different clubs that held meetings for either one or both classes. Norwich, CHF, Huntingdon, Alton and Dovercourt. These meetings were well attended and we look forward to repeating the event in 2024.
6 Metre
There were 2 open meetings for 6M in 2023. The Shearwater Trophy at The Broads which attracted an entry of 13 and the Dovercourt 6M Open. Norwich MYC will be holding its first 6M Open in 2023.
Marbleheads
We still only have 2 clubs that actively sail RMs, Norwich MYC and The Broads SC. Unfortunately both clubs had to cancel their open meetings in 2023 due to lack of entries. It now looks as though both clubs will be cancelling their open meetings for RMs in 2024.
GENERAL
Grants
The MYA awarded grants to Huntingdon C for the purchase of a container for storing sailing equipment, and to Norwich MYC for the purchase of a 12V battery for its rescue boat.
Can I remind Club representatives that the district has a grant of £700 from the MYA. This is to assist Clubs in the purchase of equipment for the benefit of the Clubs and District. At present, despite reminders, this grant is not being applied for by most of the District Clubs, which is a great shame as I know that some clubs are running on a shoestring.
Communication
It seems to me that one of the biggest problems within the ED is a distinct lack of communication. It is the responsibility of Club Committees and especially the Club Secretary/Representatives to pass on any communication from the MYA or ED council to their own members . In a lot of cases this is not being done, which is leaving the members in the dark.
At a recent MYA council meeting it was pointed out that the Eastern District was one of the districts that failed to pass on reports/results to both the MYA and ED websites. Basically, it seems that we are not pushing the District into the limelight. One way of doing this is by using the MYA Facebook page. Can I ask that you look at the page and see how some of the Clubs and indeed districts are pushing themselves to the fore.
2024
The district calendar is now complete thanks to Andy Start and we look forward to some competitive sailing during 2024.
Looking forward to 2025, can I suggest to all in the district that have friends in places, to try and bring some National events into the district, rather than let them go to the same old clubs every year.
Finally can I add that we should all concentrate on pushing the ED to the fore in 2024 and show that we are not just poor cousins o the MYA.
