New District Councillor for the Eastern District

Stephen Brown

The MYA Council is thrilled to welcome Stephen Brown to the Council. Stephen will be stepping into the role of Eastern District Councillor, and we look forward to working alongside him.

A quick word from Stephen.

Driving to a school one afternoon, I saw a group of IOMs on a pond near the A14, returned home later to announce I have seen a hobby for my retirement. Why wait till then? … and a few weeks later saw me at HRYC and a DF95 controller thrust into my hand. I had sailed since 11 when introduced to it at school, through Firefly, Heron and my own Minisail, and still own a Wanderer.

That same day returned home and ordered a DF95 and later that week, bought a second hand IOM – and was hooked!

Has been a brilliant three years of learning, sailing, racing and regional events, meeting some great people, that stand on the bank alongside us, as well as a cake almost weekly home baked for Saturday morning racing and lots of cakes baked for club open meetings.

Still yet to retire, (18 months away) my job as Outdoor Education Adviser to schools within Cambridgeshire school improvement team, the route to here being via Outward Bound Aberdyfi, Outward Bound Hurricane Island, a project with young offenders, and two deputy heads roles at Gortatole OE centre in Co Fermanagh and an Urban OE centre in Birmingham, a rich range of experiences to bring to this role.

I hope that the region will support me in this role, and I will ensure that our diverse region is represented effectively at Council, to help support the clubs and grow the membership in the East.

Anyone who wishes to contact Stephen will be able to do so via his MYA email address: eastern-dc@mya-uk.org.uk
