Yeovil & District Model Boat Club 15th May 2022
Overnight rain, cloudy conditions and the possibility of storms did not deter competitors for the first South West Summer, IOM event for 2022 at Sutton Bingham Reservoir home of Y&DMBC. The race team of Tony Edwards & Robbie Nevitt set a beat/run course that could be quickly adjusted to accommodate the variable direction and pressure of the fickle easterly airstream.
Over the day there were 16 races and the conditions produced 6 different individual race winners. A coffee break after 4 races enabled competitors to witness a rather expensive drive by of vintage Bugattis. Some rumbles of thunder and an advancing rainstorm prompted a hurried lunch decision and a dart for shelter after race 8. At that point Craig Richards sailing his Vanilla design had established a lead including 4 wins and other low numbers. In his wake the racing was close between Richard Aucott, Alternative home build, Bob Conner, BritPOP, Nigel Clarke, Sedici and Matt Moseley, Vickers V9.
Racing recommenced in the calm after the storm, a further 8 races were completed in a gradually increasing very variable breeze. Craig (Windrush) added a further 3 wins to take the event overall counting only firsts and seconds with 17 points after 3 discards from 16 races. Second with 28 points was the Sedici of Nigel Clarke narrowly ahead of fellow Sedgemoor club mate Richard Aucott on 31 points.
