IOM World Championship 2026 – Our Aims and Impacts – A Call for Volunteers

Event dates
16-23 May 2026
Event aims
The organising team have the following aims for the IOM Worlds in 2026:
- Make the 2026 IOM worlds the best racing event possible; setting a new standard for the quality of racing, race management and event organisation in radio sailing.
- Promote the IOM class and the wider sport of radio sailing in the UK.
- Raise money to promote the class and the sport globally through good media coverage.
- Leave a legacy of organisational processes and documents to pass on to IOMICA/IRSA for future events.
- Run an environmentally sustainable event, reducing our impact where possible.
Wider impact of the event
One of the aims for the organising team is to bring in new members for clubs and the MYA and in doing so bring more people into this fantastic sport and community. This will mainly be done regionally, all under the MYA/IOM World’s banner. This is for all clubs and classes not just the IOM class to benefit from. District events such as open days/try a boat days and having exhibition sailing at targeted sailing events will be part of the development plan.
Green Event
As sailors, we are connected with nature and it is our intention to reduce the environmental impact of the event wherever possible. Reducing travel during the event by having accommodation options on site, using commercially provided electric powered ribs, and a predominantly online notice board will help us to reduce our wider impact.
Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers to be part of the organising team and also for anyone wishing to be part of the team on site during the event itself.
We are looking for volunteers to join the organising team to assist in the following areas:
- Media coverage/promotion.
- Sponsorship.
- Organising the social program.
- Organising the accommodation/transport for the race/jury team.
- Running district events targeted at new members and giving existing members a chance to try new classes.
- Managing the environmental impact.
During the event:
- Registration/Measurement.
- Course setting.
- Start/finish judges
- Scoring
- Fleet board
- Assisting competitors on site – parking, food/drinks etc
- Assisting the race team
- Running the racing
