Guildford MYC’s DF95 Summer Series 2023 Report
Report on GMYC’s Summer Series
Guildford Model Yacht Club’s fortnightly Wednesday morning Summer Series for DF 95s, has been a great success in 2023. Demonstrating again the great virtue in sailing at Abbey Meads Lake, Chertsey, because, unlike our surrounding clubs, we do not have any weed in the summer time. Please remember this next year and come and join in the fun when you are unable to sail on your own lake because of the weed. You will be welcomed with open arms.
This year we have had some fantastic racing at Abbey Meads because the northerly winds blow straight down the lake and made for some very exciting sailing for most of the events.
The final event of the series was a great success with 12 races sailed in really weird variable winds, basically from the SW and sometimes from the SE, but basically from the south.
The best bit of the event was the interruption at lunchtime for Martin Crysell’s hotdog barbecue and sharing a bottle of wine, which became the focus of lots of lunchtime chat.
The most successful skipper was once again Barrie Martin, with his multiple wins. The scoring was very close indeed for the runners-up with only a few points separating 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th and whilst we all suffered from falling into holes in the breeze we did enjoy the excitement of the racing and the close finishes. These scores also affected the overall results for the Summer Series, which are also published.
Distracted a little by the barbecue, this upset Martin’s usual performance, but he did win the Series by winning 3 of the earlier events and he was presented with the lovely French copper trophy winning the Summer Series and was thanked for providing the barbecue.
