  1. Mike Ewart replied to mdicks's topic in RG 65
Bearing in mind the discussions ongoing about the M 10R and A class rules at present my recommendation would be good luck fellows go your own way, I have 2 RG65's and the only change I would want in the rules would be to stick to the standard terms as per the RRS definitions not a difficult thing to do. Does it actually matter what the Championships are called? Vote no to IRSA taking over the cl;ass
  2. It is suprising how much scales vary, a good check weight is a valuable tool for all modellers
  3. Hi Terry what yacht are you talking about, most of the yachts with a weight on the certificate have teir sail area determined by weight as this will increase their waterline length and thus will be out of class if overweight, there is tolerance in weight built into the boats and this will be pointed out on the class website or the class rules, so look this up
  4. Clubs are always free to do what they want and race as they want but it s always best to have stated aims/needs for any form of racing, the full size skippers sail most of the time at club level in handicap fleets governed by a system called the Portsmouth yardstick, quite complex but in the model field Abington Park and Lee Valley run a handicapping system which is working well within its own set parameters, just make sure everyone in your club knows what you are signing up to and most important make it enjoyable
  5. Erika at a guess you had lee helm never very easy to sail with, so constant correction with the rudder will slow you down, moving the mast aft would help to remove lee helm and it probably gave a little more twist in the jib and main which helps acceleration, try and tune out any lee helm and always adjust your sails for each outing. There are no real set and forget settings on a sail, it reacts to the conditions at the time, often in a blow the chop on the water can cause the mast tip to be moving back and forward which makes a mockery of your static settings. As you say you are new to this game get a notebook and put the settings in to the book with an assessment of the conditions and how it all worked, this will help you determine what works best for you and build your experience( the first 30 years are the worse!!)
  6. Hi Olivier is perfectly correct and I believe Mike Clifton sells them
  7. Any one looking for a Roccoco, there is one on ebay at present looks quite nice, go on you know you want one
  8. Mike Ewart replied to a post in a topic in Racing Rules
Consult your local measurere we have been given very clear instructions on how to apply this rule change, and the knowledge base I am sure has the appropriate photos and explanation as well
  9. Mike Ewart posted a topic in 6 Metre
Please do all have a look at the for sale section in the six metre website only been up a week or so and has been extremely successful we need more boats to put on the site, so here we go asking you to turn out your lofts and garages and bring them to us in the form of adverts we have people waiting for boats
  10. One thing we often hear from prospective owners is but it wont fit in my car, well have a look at the web site on the home page is a photo of a six metre with sails in a smart car so no more saying it wont fit in my car
  11. Mike Ewart posted a topic in 6 Metre
All of you attentive forum readers will have noticed we have added some stuff to the six metre website we now have a for sale section and we have added some more bits to the design section, some details on John Lewis designs, there are some notes there on some of the designs there is also a comment about a design called Jewel a 2002 design of John Lewis possibly his last six metre, now we are very interested in obtaining a copy of this design so have a look around and ask anyone who might have a copy of this let us know please.. So do have a look around the new bits on the website.
  12. for safety sake I would consider it to be 4 of the longer boats lengths from the nearest edge of the mark and if you can judge that closely on the water can you come and sail as my team mate please
  13. Mike Ewart replied to Stephen Ridgway's topic in IOM
Hi Stephen absolutely no reason why you cant use a burgee on a model yacht I have burgees on most of mine from a footy up an A boat, Ken Binks used to do them and I think Mike Clifton still does or make it yourself, it is visible easily in most conditions I generally have different colours either side and I like to have a safety line on it connecting the burgee to the backstay as in an entanglement they are often removed
  14. Good to hear John, all new designs and interest in the sixes gratefully accepted Mike
  15. looks good, the horse trough would make a good measuring tank maybe?
  16. Mike Ewart replied to Graham Allen's topic in IOM
Hi Graham if you are going for a jack line why are you thinking about mast rings, the jack line is fixed at the top and bottom of the mast, and at various intermeadiate points I would say one fixing midway between each jack line hook, but unless you are using the mast for more than one rig why complicate matters with a jack line, really people tended to use them when they wanted to or had to reduce the number of masts they were using, not really any aerodynamic advantage over mast rings
  17. Providing the leeward boat did not go beyond head to wind and gave the other 2 boats room and opportunity to keep clear yes they must give room, as it says in the rule book a call is not strictly speaking required but does always help to clarify the position.
  18. I would add that yellow should have been calling for mark room and if nessecary before the zone as allowed for in the rules
  19. My supposition for what it is worth is that the windward boat must be given room and opportunity to keep clear if the windward boat had attempted to miss the broached boat and failed then he is not at fault if no attempt was made then I think he is at fault
  20. looks good Brian

latest fleet news new (to us) Ravenna and Renaisance on the water this morning Romanza's to follow soon we hope
  22. Mike Ewart replied to Brianq53's topic in 6 Metre
looking very good, it will be a very interesting season seeing how these Romanza's measure up to the existing designs
  23. Hi Vinnie, I am definitly not a pro builder but I would put 2 coats of the 80gm cloth on because you are going to have to sand down a bit between coats I would assume, also they are large heavy boats and a coming together can cause problems with an ultra lightweight hull
  24. Mike Ewart replied to Brianq53's topic in 6 Metre
Looking good, waiting with bated breath to see her sailing, well done
  25. Further to twin winch set up on my A boat, using two whirlwind winches, have done it quite easily on DX6i and can adjust travel on both from the transmitter, also have a further control in that can let off jib without changing main by using the second stick. Thanks very much Dave A your instructions work great
