The MYA is saddened to hear of the passing of Ian Vickers of New Zealand

Ian was one of the great figures of international radio sailing — a talented sailor, designer and builder, best known to many for the Vickers V-series IOM designs. Through Vickers RC Sailing, his boats became a familiar and highly competitive presence in fleets around the world.

Ian’s background as a professional boatbuilder, his achievements on the water, and his dedication to the IOM class earned him huge respect across the sport. He will be remembered not only for his innovation and craftsmanship, but also as a gentleman within the radio sailing community.

Through Vickers RC Sailing, Ian developed and built the renowned V-series IOM designs, from early boats such as the V3 through to the highly successful V11 and V12. His boats have been sailed competitively across the world, with the V12 notably finishing 2nd and 3rd at the 2024 IOM World Championship in Gladstone, Australia, and 1st place in this years 2026 IOM World Championship in Datchet, United Kingdom.
