Three Rivers RYC 50 Years of sailing

Celebrating 50 Years of Sailing:
The 3 Rivers Radio Yacht Club Marks a Milestone at Bury Lake

Marcus, from a Community Arts organisation has recently become a regular user of the Aquadrome, who when taking a quiet Sunday stroll around the Aquadrome to get a feel for the landscape and the community that enjoys it, he came across a strange looking yellow boat on a trolley going to the car park, (The second version of a bespoke club recue boat) his curiosity got the better of him asking what was it for? This introduced him to someone who welcomed him to one of the site’s most longstanding and dedicated groups — the 3 Rivers Radio Yacht Club.

Marcus takes it from here…

As I walked by Bury Lake, I was greeted by Trevor, a friendly and enthusiastic member of the club. He began chatting to me about the group’s history, how their weekly sailing sessions work, and the passion their members share for radio-controlled yacht racing. Before I left, he extended an invitation: “Come down on Tuesday and have a go for yourself.”

I’m glad I accepted.

That Tuesday, I returned to the lakeside where the club welcomed me as though I’d always been part of their gatherings. Controller in hand, I took to the water for the first time. Very quickly, I discovered just how addictive and calming the sport can be. There is something unexpectedly meditative about focusing on the wind, the ripples, and the gentle competition between yachts skimming across the lake.

A few days later, Trevor emailed to say, “Although we couldn’t include your results, for a first time out you beat two others in each race you did — well done.” His kind, light-hearted message perfectly captured the warmth and humour that seems to define the club.

Trevor also shared news of their recent Christmas and 50th Anniversary celebration, held at the Denham Carvery with a record 26 members attending. The club was founded in 1975 by Stan Cleal, so it felt especially meaningful that his son, Maurice, was invited to cut the anniversary cake.

The event also honoured two long-standing members:

John Male, who has served as Race Officer for around 20 years, and
Dick Grange, who has been club secretary for 12 years.

Their awards were beautifully hand-painted by resident artist Max Lembke, whose work continues to be admired by members old and new.

Meeting the Radio Yacht Club gave me a glimpse into the heart of the Aquadrome. Their history, humour, dedication, and sense of community have shaped the character of Bury Lake for half a century.

As they celebrate 50 years of sailing, it is a privilege to acknowledge the contribution they have made, not just to the site, but to the many friendships and traditions formed along its banks.

Congratulations to the Radio Yacht Club on your 50th Anniversary. May the next 50 years bring clear winds, calm waters, and many more joyful races on the lake.

Thanks again,

Marcus
