2026 IOMMDCS&C R2 Manor Park RSC Results

Sunday 28^th June saw a break in the really hot weather leading up to the event. There were 28 skippers booked in who were pleased to see a strong top suit breeze across the Manor Park RSC lake. Colin Walton was the PRO, and he was ably assisted by members of the club who did a sterling job throughout the day.

Whilst they were setting stuff up Darin was already in the rescue boat setting out the initial course. One of the advantages of Manor Park is the raised skippers control area as it gives you a good perspective down on to the boats. It was good so see a big turn out from all over the country not just the Midland District, and with the quality of the fleet it was inevitable that at times a trip to the B fleet would be difficult to avoid.

Colin and team got the event underway at 10:00am with two Seeding Heats. The wind was mostly from the SW but mixed in at times was some southerly and even westerly. This created some holes in the wind and if you were in one it was difficult to stay in contention. Colin had offered me the loan of his boat for the event, which was generous of him. I had not sailed in one of these events for a few years being mostly concerned with race management these days, so it was good to get the thumbs back on the sticks again. Thanks to everyone who helped with the launch and recovery of the boat.

The sky was getting quite grey on the horizon and most of us at the sign of some rain went and grabbed our wet weather gear, good job we did as a front came through and with it some heavy rain for around 10 minutes but enough to really soak everyone. I was sailing at the time and had to turn my back to it. Luckily that passed over and we had great conditions for the rest of the day.

Tim H got a port end flier in one race to a cheer from the watchers, and he went on to take race three. The wind had swung to the west and so Darin shifted the course round parallel to the bank for race four only for the wind to abandon that corner when we started racing, so that meant we went back to the first course, a variation of which we then used for most of the rest of the day. I called it a day during lunchtime and offered to assist where needed for the rest of the day.

During the mid-afternoon break Colin asked the skippers if they wanted to carry on sailing until 16:30 and the answer was definitely, the conditions were good and the extra hour allowed the team to get 10 full races in for the day.

Congratulations to Austin Guerrier, Tim Hand & Darin Ballington the top three skippers who managed the conditions the best, and to the remainder of the skippers for attending. This was the second event in the Midland District IOM summer series, and we have had turn outs of 27 and 28 so far which is a step up from a few years post Covid and it is good to see the series attracting skippers from outside our normal MD clubs.

The next round will be at Bournville RS&MBC on 20^th September for the Mac Colyer Trophy.

Looking to the future Chris Cook has offered to help with the series management as I am not in a position to attend most of the events and it needs the next generation of active skippers to take on the role of guiding the future structure of the Midland District IOM events. I will be liaising with him in the next few weeks. One of the first tasks will be the establishment of the IOMMDWCS which runs from November 2026 to the beginning of April 2027.
