2024 Yare Cup and EDCS 1 for IOM’s Report and Results

On Saturday 23rd March, Norwich Model Yacht Club Held its annual Yare Cup for IOM’s, which is part of the Eastern District EDCS Series.
Initially there were 23 entries, but due to various reasons 21 boats came to the Start Line.
It was nice to see that most of the top sailors in the Eastern District were present. One wonders if the retirement of the winner of the last 4 meetings who was not there, influenced entries. Nevertheless, an excellent entry.
Wind was directly from the West blowing at a steady 18 knots gusting 25.
A windward leeward course with gates at either end was set at a distance of approx. 150 metres
Order of the day was which rig to use, initially all opted for No 2 rig, although throughout the day as the wind increased and decreased, PRO Vinnie Zammit allowed time out for sail changes. By lunch time there were quite a few of the fleet in No 3 rig and by the end of the day most were in No 1 rig.
Due to the number of entries, the Heat Management system was used.
Winners of the 2 seeding races were Duncan Ellis and Dave Green. Interesting to note that the top placed 5 winners in the seeding races were the top 5 in the event.
By lunch time 4 races were completed with Duncan coming out on top followed by Vernon Appleton and Ben Harker.
During the afternoon the wind started to ease, but occasionally rose which caused some headaches as to which rig to choose.
During the day the wind caused a few incidents especially at the windward mark, which in the end caused 3 boats to retire.
Congratulations must go to all the Competitors for their conduct during the event and we look forward to seeing you again on The 20th April for the DF 95 Open.
Many Thanks to the race team for all their work prior and during the event.
Vinnie Zammit
