2023 MD6MCS R2 Bournville RS&MBC results.

11 skippers gathered at Bournville RS&MBC from Two Islands RYC, Lee Valley MYC, Whitefriars SC, Dartmoor MBC and the host club for an early start time of 9:30am The PRO was Vic Bellerson ably assisted by Roger Hopper and I scored. Vic called the initial briefing on time and reminded the skippers that these were gentlemen’s boats and that he expected a clean race.

The course started at the bottom end of the lake and took in a windward mark and spreader to a downwind gate followed by a beat back up to the road end of the lake for the finish line. The forecast was for it to blow down the lake, but the wind did not know that, and it was all over the shop, which made for interesting headers and holes. Apart from the usual selection of boats there were 3 new Shadow designs by Martin Dovey on the water for the first time. They look different with a straight bow, take a look at the pictures, they are boats 35, 45 & 86.

Shaun with his Ravenna was on it from the start with wins in the first 4 races, one race was won right at the start as he sailed across the line on starboard, just pulling ahead and the tacked onto port straight into a lift and was away, the others were no where near catching him. Shaun was then joined by Graeme Harris with his Rococo in several close races, Graeme taking race 6. By race 9 John Burgoine got his Shadow going nicely to take the win and he also took races 11 & 12.

Race 8 was an interesting one for 3 boats as just before the start a squall came down the lake and caused some gear failures, we had a mast step come free from the bottom of the hull, a broken shroud and a gooseneck become completely detached from the mast. The broken shroud was replaced and the boat was back on the water for the next race.

We not only had a squall but also a couple of heavy showers that had me inside to keep the score sheets dry, saying that we completed 12 races by 13:00 when Vic said that that was the last race of the day. From the comments of the travelling skippers, they said that they had enjoyed the day and would be back again to compete in the other two races in the Midland District series.
