Thank you to Hampton Court for staging the first two rounds of this years series.
Saturday – 11 boats came to the line on Saturday and competed in some challenging conditions which rapidly found any gear weaknesses. There was some close racing but top honours went to Peter Wiles who won 10 of the 13 races.
The conditions certainly brew the cobwebs away after the winter months. Several boats were found waving their rudders to the skippers when the strong gusts came through. Most boats started in top suit or flat main, but soon most changed down to 2nd suit or a combination of top jib and 2nd main. A few even had to go down to 3rd suit to keep control.
The shifts could be vast with you loosing 15m in as many seconds.
Sunday – The fleet had reduced to 8 boats, but again some exciting racing with Peter not getting it all his own way with 6 skippers taking at least 1 win each out of 14 races.
Well done to the race team for keeping us racing but allowing boats to be fixed between batches of back to back races.
Many thanks to Mike Kemp for taking some excellent shots on the Saturday morning when most of the fleet were still in top suit, although you’ll soon see why boats were changing down.
