Met and Southern 10R District Championships 1st June 2014
The 10 skippers from 4 different clubs were greeted at Guildford MYC lake at Abbey Meads by glorious sunshine and a light northerly wind.
A windward – leeward course was set and with the wind holding up for the early races, Colin Trower of Hampton Court MYC showed his intentions by winning the first three.
As the sun rose and the temperature increased, the wind became more variable, switching from northerly to southerly or south easterly, giving the skippers runs and beats on the same leg of the course, interspersed with periods of calm.
The race programme managed to move onwards through all of this and with the cooperation of the competitors, it was at times necessary to change (reverse) the course while the boats were waiting on the start line, and so racing progressed, Dave Andrews, also of Hampton Court, had moved into the reckoning, with the ever consistent Hugh McAdoo of the home club chasing hard.
By the time the wind had finally deserted the lake, 13 races had been completed. Dave Andrews’ run had stalled for the final three races, Colin Trower coming to the fore again, winning a total of seven races to take first place. Dave Andrews and Hugh McAdoo ended on equal points for second place, but Dave with four wins to Hugh’s two came out on top. Gordon Bartholomew from Chelmsford RSC, with the only 10R rigged marblehead in the fleet came fourth.
