MYA Measurers – How to Become One

Estimated Reading Time 5 mins

How do I become a Measurer?

The basics first – there are two types of measurer, Sail Measurer and Class Measurer.

Sail Measurer

Interested parties should use the Sail Measurer application form below and send it to the MYA Technical Officer.

The IOM, M, 10R, 6 Metre and A Class rules all require the measurer to be an Official Measurer as defined by the ERS as someone appointed by the relevant World Sailing member. In the UK that is the Royal Yachting Association. The RYA’s Sail Measurement Course is the pathway to become a Sail Measurer appointed by the RYA as an Official Measurer. Once this step has been taken the measurer will be confident to certify sails for all classes that use the Equipment Rules of Sailing (ERS) definitions/terminology and Standard Class Rules (SCR) format.

Find a Sail Measurement Course by searching on the RYA website for details of forthcoming courses – www.rya.org.uk – please note that searching for the sail measurement course can be difficult.

After successful completion of the course and appointment a Sail Measurer may certify the sails of any of the classes (IOM, M, 10R, 6M, A Class). The 36” class rules do not require certification of sails.

Class Measurer

Class Measurers for 36” and 6M classes do not have to be Sail Measurers.

Class Measurers for other classes are appointed from Sail Measurers.

Interested parties should use the Class Measurer form below and send it to the MYA Technical Officer.

Learn about certification of these classes by reading the generic and class specific study material that can be found at this page – MYA Measurer – Resources.

When you are confident of your knowledge of the class rules and certification process, please contact the MYA Technical Officer who will provide questions that will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge. Once this step is passed you will be asked to demonstrate your abilities to an existing Class Measurer.
