May 15, 2025May 15 Can anyone post a pic of the fixing point of the shrouds at the front of the mast? I assume the shroud wire does a turn around the self tapping screw? thank you!
May 15, 2025May 15 Author I’ll take another look, I only found side fixing shrouds but I probably missed some! Thank you!
May 16, 2025May 16 Most that I've seen these days is a hole in the front of the mast, and a stainless hook with an eye. Eye usually perpendicular to the hook, crimp shrouds to the hook, hook placed in hole in mast. Simple, easy to replace shrouds when needed. Deffo my preferred method
May 16, 2025May 16 Author I like that idea better than a self tapping screw in the mast. Many thanks for that!
May 16, 2025May 16 Brad Gibson suggests sliding a length of stainless steel capilliary tubing from a syringe over the wire and bending it into a sharp hook shape.... apparently, it doesn't let go and very easy to replace... virtually zero drag.
May 16, 2025May 16 Author Sounds a simple solution Gary, not sure the zero drag would make much difference on the Rhythm, but an interesting way forward. Does BG suggest 'one' hook for each shroud or both into one?
May 16, 2025May 16 I've rerigged a couple of masts - with solid wire shrouds - with a hole on each side, feed the wire in and up out of the top of the mast, then bend each to form around a bowsie and slide back into the mast. As mentioned earlier - sailsetc 'rigging guide' shows this method. It's really neat, but fiddly as hell to get the lengths right (and not get them wrapped round each other inside). I favour one hole on the front face, with a single hook which the shrouds are crimped/wrapped onto. As Larry described. My current rig happens to have a heatshrink sleeve over it: a) stops it falling out while rigging (but so does a piece of tape...); b) reduces windage a bit (but then how perfect are your mark roundings and tacking...?) I'm more bothered about getting equal lengths (i.e. rig upright port/starboard) than the ideal attachment method. Just keep it reliable, robust, and simple. Many thanks, that method is the one i'm going for. Really appreciate your input! Stuart
May 17, 2025May 17 I have used this method of bending the shrouds to hook directly into the mast. https://www.facebook.com/iomsdownunder/videos/another-tip-to-make-building-a-rig-just-a-little-easier-thanks-to-graeme-howie-f/1492045977491350/ It is simple and works. John

I forgot to add I follow the SailsETC use of two layers of shrink wrap as well!

John That is a simple method! and easy to put some shrink sleeve over also. Really helpful! Thanks John.
