We are a relatively small club and use A Fleet for our race results. However, as our numbers are growing, I decided to act as RO in the first of 7 races to see how the average points worked out (for future reference).

A Fleet took all 6 of my results and averaged them to produce a score for me in race 1. It did not allow me a discard before averaging.

Other competitors had 2 discards over the 7 races, I had none - which seemed a little unfair. Is there a way of setting things up so that RO averages are worked out to allow discard(s)?

Is that 7 days across a series, or 7 actual races (heats) on a day?

We give average (series) points to members who help at an open event which is also a Club round.

HMS - which A Fleet appears to have as a built-in mode - allows for Redress Average Score. BUT, that gives you the average of prior races/heats - if it's given in the first one then it doesn't help as much as might be expected.

But if your club is using A Fleet, then you're kinda accepting its algorithms as your SI ....

It’s across 7 races in a weekly event, making up a 9 event series. I was really trialling the RO role and went into A Fleet to see what it said about average points. I think I went in via Redress. I’m not very tech savvy but seem to have landed on something that I would describe as unsatisfactory and unlikely to entice others into taking on the RO role

Well as I say, Average Redress under the HMS system could well give summat 'unexpected' on the first race. If you can, you could try creating a different scenario and see what it comes up with - if you put yourself 'as RO' in the 2nd one rather than the 1st, does that change the outcome?

At LRSC we award average points for someone doing Duty rather than competing, but it's averaged across whole (6-8 Sundays) not the average up until that date. (And its a spreadsheet written to our Club's Series rules, not HMS or A Fleet - for the series overall)

Remember that HMS and Afleet treat the 1st race as a seeding race unless told otherwise - so assuming that you have set to single fleet so that seeding is not active, all races should be counted and the last time I checked, HMS and Afleet both compute AVG including all finishes - they don't do the discards and then compute the AVG of the remaining races. Once they have computed your AVG, then they apply the discards to compute your score.

I assume this was a race management decision when HMS was created.

Also a comment, for 7 races there is only 1 discard. The second discard is after race 8.

This has now been looked at again, and results re-entered. The outcome seems to be satisfactory, but it does put an emphasis on the RO completing all races (any retirement/malfunction will adversely affect the RO as the average is calculated before discards come into effect, rather than discarding the retirement before averaging out). As John pointed out.

Why not do a "manual" calc on the way you want to do discards and hence average score, and then GO BACK to the individual race and manually enter that value under "Redress..RO Awards points"
