A class identification.

Featured Replies

Hi collective brains. I've recently bought this A Class yacht. Unfortunately this is the only pic I have at the moment as its in the garage and its raining. It has been registered but again I can't get to see the number as its outside. Just wondered if anyone recognises the general model. The Hull is painted carbon fibre and the deck planking has been done by the last owner to a high standard. The mast and booms are carbon fibre too. My initial thought was that it is a Venom but I have a very limited experience of these things.

Thanks

Not sure transom is quite right for a Venom and it has radial jib arrangement which looks like Peter Wiles’ system, so my guess would be  a Sweet.

Perhaps an Argo?

The fin and lead look about right and also Peter's jib fitting.

Great design for its time, would take anything that would be thrown at it, and usually with a full rig.

The only problem was a massive turning circle!

Thanks for all the replies so far. I have had a good poke around it and found GBR1462 inside the hull and 62 on the sails. Will contact the A Class registrar to see if he has any more info and to register my ownership. Cheers.

This is an Argo, I believe. I still have a Mould for one of these that I got from the late Geoff Raygadas-l1600(1).thumb.jpg.03a987397101a61668a7034adfacca6c.jpg

That looks promising...definitely the same jib fixture and rudder fitment...

I think you will find that Ancaeus was originally owned by Clive Tappenden based in the Isle of Wight (Ryde MYC) . One of our longstanding RA enthusiasts sadly no longer with us.

Had her out on the water today and the previous owner turned up with the original measurement certificate so I can confirm that my boat is an Argo, around 1997 vintage. Originally named Gap Seeker and owned by N Rothwell then R Cringle. Looks lovely on the water. Thanks all for your help in this.
