Widget

Am I right in believing there was a Mk 2 Widget? I have a vague idea that it might have a Gadget moulded deck - or am I getting it all wrong? 😀

Yes that is correct there is a MK2 Widget. Best person to ask is Graham Elliott as he has built Widgets although l don’t know which versions. @Graham Elliott

Hi, if my memory serves a Gadget is 10mm or so wider than a Widget.

Either Mark Dicks (Dicks Design) could tell you about the design, or maybe David Creed who supplied either kits or fully built Widgets.

Only one Widget design, no mk2.

Deck layout changed from the original flat deck that Ken Roberts built to the skiff deck that Dave Creed improved upon.

Gadget was a completely different design.

Both these very successful designs came from one of the greatest model yacht designers, Chris Dicks.

Absolutely Graham, that’s why I built and sail a Metric Magik.
I’ve seen boats described as Widgets with a flat ply deck and with a raised foredeck and skiff type rear deck, it’s just evolution of the same hull design but thanks for clarifying.

I have just got this Widget and have stripped it ready for full paint job. Hope to sail it at Poole later in the new year. Hull No 1701 . Looks like it was built by Dave Creed

Looks like a nice boat Tom. Can you give me a ball park idea of how much it cost please and what was included in the deal? Amazing what a difference the Creed deck makes. My mate's 'Mk 1' has a flush deck but that's from gel coated fibreglass so it also looks very good. What's more it only cost £150 with an assembled B rig and everything bar masts and booms for the A and C. Unfortunately the included Whirlwind Low Profile winch isn't very well at the moment! Does the winch go under the foredeck with your boat?

I got it for a donation to the RNLI . It came with a fin and lead ,also a rudder. Probably cost about £300 to get it to top condition so a project worth doing.

At Gosport we built a fleet of ADRIATIC IOMs ( basically a wooden SEDECI) And we used cheap 40kg/cm servos from Amazon that cost about £30 each as a lever arm winch on a 2 to1 system , worked very well and cheap to replace. Lots of room under the fordeck!

I will post image of the boat when finished. Not sure what colour?

Thanks for letting me know Tom. So no rigs then? Mind you if it cost you just a donation to the RNLI then thats a very good deal. £300 all in is not a lot for a decent one metre though, especially as a lot of it will be new.
Thats an interesting account about what Gosport have done. At Rudyard we’re acquiring a pretty mixed bag of older One Metres and I have two Tony Abel Woodpeckers to get up and running. One was daubed in yellow paint all over and I’m not sure what colour that will end up but it’ll probably be care of Halfords rattle cans with a varnished deck. As for your Widget - Go for something visible in a scrum around a mark, mind you a very individual boat always gets blamed for all the contacts !!

I have just done a refit myself on a widget. I did a vlog over on YouTube showing it all.
