May 14, 20241 yr There seems to be a surprisingly high number of events cancelled or postponed this year already. The question is Why? Too many seem to cite lack of entries. WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS? Is the London emissions zone causing reluctance for some to come to events inside the M25 or is it just the cost of London based accommodation. Are we just reluctant to commit and enter in good time? (is this just a cumulative effect i.e. if there are only a couple of entries on the MYA entries list we are not prepared to travel to an event with only a few other competitors?) Is it poor timetabling i.e. too many events for a class close together so we pick one ands save the 'brownie points' for other weekends to keep family etc. happy? Are these the issues or something else? Your thoughts
May 15, 20241 yr It was flooding at our club, and the water table is still high. And so postponed but now back on, welcome to HRYC!! other factors ..£££ travel costs time and other factors we are all getting older less inclined to drive maybe? ……….. But I have been to 3 non club events this year already, from Norwich to CHF to Manor and all great events!! it is frustrating that there seems to be nothing on from now to late sept to travel to, From a helm with wandering tendencies ( many in the club would agree)
May 15, 20241 yr Too many races and classes maybe? Clashes are unavoidable, Lester came up with what seemed at first an over complicated system for doing the calendar and we all fought against it but when you looked closely it was real easy and logical. Skippers supporting club events, lots of clubs now getting 10+ boats, this is great as the MYA is a collection of clubs.

May 16, 20241 yr If only I had a few more boats, and sailed competitively at that level… Only one more IOM event in our region till Sept.. Will have to look around Edited May 16, 20241 yr by Stephen B
May 16, 20241 yr Taking Darin’s question first… What attracts me to an event is knowing that the underfoot conditions are sound, that access is reasonably straightforward and that I will have mates there. Poole would have been perfect for me (and yes ok it is my home club too) but I broke my shoulder the four days before it started. I go to events because they are fun - I’d love to do well but if I don’t make a fool of myself, I’ll be happy. why don’t I go to more? They need to be within a get there and back within a day distance (which for me means not much beyond Brum) and sadly there seem to be few events near the south coast (yes thanks Gosport and Poole). We do a have a plan to travel further so hopefully that will happen. Can I just say thanks to those clubs that do organise events - I don’t think I’ve ever been to a bad one.
May 17, 20241 yr What makes an event worth attending… new sailing environment, new people to meet, break out of the mindset that these 4 people at the club always come first, some might say bigger fleets but not true at Hunts, 18 on line this winter most weeks
