I have been drooling over some pictures of a Clem vane and have decided to try making one to add to all the other vane types that I have. 
 

But… details are rather scant.  Anyone out there with some drawings that they are willing to share?     Failing that, anyone willing to let me borrow their Clem so that I can take my own measurements?

I have a Clem Edwards vane on my Clem Edwards Marblehead which I'll gladly lend to you to copy.

 

I'll take it to WLYC for the 1st DF TT weekend and give it to Nigel if you're not there.

A few photos of Dad’s clem 36r gear

Thought I'd share these beauties, passed to me by a since departed member at Eastbourne. I was advised one is a break back, the other a moving carriage type. To me the break back appears similar in principle to the Clem.

Dummy question - are these too big for a V36?

I'm unlikely to smuggle an A or 10R into my premises without crticism, but might get away with a 36R.

Jez,  The moving carriage would look great on "Bobcat" as that's what it had on originally.

 

The break back is a Jones type and with the bottom slot cut down will probably be o.k. on a 36.  several of us at Fleetwood use Jones types on our 36 boats.

 

Maybe, in the future, when you've had some practise, Eastbourne could host the V36" Nationals over a weekend?

The Jones gear was often copied (including by a much younger me as a school metal working project!) and I used them as Marblehead gears and Dad has got one the Dick Seagar (now there’s a blast from the past!) scaled up for his A class (Wokanido) and yes I’ve seen versions used on many a 36r just as Derek says..

To be honest it’s often a case of start with what youve got, yes maybe it’s a few grams heavier but if it’s cleaned and working efficiently and you get the angles right on the lake then it’ll beat a poorly set new lightweight gear. 
the emphasis on vane sailing is to be ‘right not light’ maybe at the very top level you need both but you will often see very old yachts take good points from the latest most expensive boats because the trim is everything on vane sailing. So start with the Jones gear and take joy in seeing the past members pride a joy sailing down the lake again. 
I absolutely love the idea that the 36r class could race again at Eastbourne, that idea Is enough for me to dust one of my old girls off!

I am busy making a small Jones for my 36 and have made the body out of brass.  So it is heavy(ish).   I need to solder some pins in situ and so having the body out of a “meltable” material was not an option.  
 

this picture is of it part built.  I will see if I can drill out some material to reduce the weight.

I think I'll have a go at a Reece Easy vane. Relatively simple to make with brass from the hobby shop and a bit of perspex.

I had a Jones gear given to me years ago in Australia and can't, for the life of me, remember what happened to it. It came with a Stollery marblehead kit.

Nigel now has "Bobcat" so maybe I need to have a chat to see if he already has a vane for the boat. 

As you know we have two bridges on the perimeter of Princes Park lake which used to have wooden platforms at the same level as the lower paved level but these have long gone. I suppose without them we can't entertain hosting an event?

Would some sort of floating pontoon be acceptable? On a personal level, I would like to see vane yachts back at the club just to retain the historical links.

Unfortunately, as we don't presently free sail on the lake, any request to the cash strapped local authority to restore the platforms would not be well received.

In the mean time I will monitor the for sale posts for something suitable, is there a source anywhere of 36R or R36R designs?

@Jezza ahh yes that would be tricky.. It reminds me of sailing vane at Whitton where a ladder was used to span a similar bridge gap and that springy platform wasn’t much fun !

Having used the floating-block platform at Datchet that kind of solution, while not as great as the famous Fleetwood bridge end solution, could be possible.. Keeping public off it in a park would be a potential H&S nightmare, but a boy can dream..!
