I'm very new to IOM sailing and have recently been given a boat number by Nick Cowern for the yacht I've started to sail. Is it important to get the boat fully certificated or should I be content simply to sail using the number I have been given. I'm confident the boat complies with the class measurements and build / material requirements as the 'Rhythm'  was built from Graham Bantock's plans and using 'Sails etc.' materials and components. If I need to get it measured and the build requirements certified who does this?

Hi Ian, you should arrange to have the boat measured and a certificate issued. If you wish to race, some clubs and most events will not let you compete if the boat is not shown to comply by certification.

A list of authorised measures can be found on this site or you may have one in your club.

Hi Michael, Thank you for your prompt and helpful reply and for your welcome. I'll do as you suggest.

As an IOM measurer please note that there are two elements, in that with a new boat you need to go through "Certification Control" which is pretty straightforward.  However, if you go to any larger events your boat may be subject to Equipment Inspection.  This will include elements that are not included in Certification Control (the Class Rules are Here).  Section C covers Equipment Inspection, Section D on cover the items under Certification Control.
