September 28, 20223 yr I am new to the boating world but have been an aeromodeller since I could walk. I bought a ready to sale Volante Hurricane but apparently it is too light for the IOM classification. Can someone please tell me if the Gothic IOM complies with the MYA rules as I might attempt a hull during the winter months. The IOM weight seems to be 4 kgs and of wooden construction. Any help appreciated. Thanks Ed. M Edited September 28, 20223 yr by Edward Mcilroy Spelling mistakes
September 28, 20223 yr Hi Edward Have a look at this link https://www.iomclass.org/class-rules-2022/. These are the Class Rules for an IOM yacht. The Gothic is an IOM design. There are other designs available for either building in wood or Glass Fibre which are the two materials used for the hull. Carbon fibre is allowed for the fin and rudder. The fin if you look at the rules has a weight tolerance the maximum being 2500 grams which most builders along with maximum depth seems to be the most accepted as this gives maximum righting' The 4 Kg is the minimum weight of the boat ready to race. Most builders even using cedar wood for the hull end up adding internal ballast to take the completed boat to this weight. Masts and spars are either aluminium or for the very skilled builders/skippers laminated wood. The wood option being extremely rare. As stated above there are other designs available, one of the most popular being the Alternative by BG Design from whom plans can be obtained. This design is for home building only and is competitive up to at least National level in the right skippers hands. BG design are the designers of probably the most successful IOM yacht 'Britpop'. There is in the IOM section of the Forum an excellent build of an Alternative in cedar detailed. I'm sure Richard who wrote this will be along soon to give you the benefit of his experience. Eric
September 29, 20223 yr Author Hi Mick, Thanks, was going to make from ply and use beech strip but not sure yet as there is I believe a target weight of 4 kg
September 29, 20223 yr Hi Edward, if you are going to build an IOM l am sure alot of people will agree. Get the plans for an Alternative from Brad Gibson. He designs fantastic boats and you will end up with a boat that will do you proud. His website is bgsailsanddesigns.com or just google bg sails it will come up then go to SHOP and you will find line plans for his Alternative design. You will need fin bulb and rudder a great place to source these is robot yachts as they have great performance. Best wishes with your build👍🏻 Rohan
September 29, 20223 yr Although I agree with Rohan the Alternative is a great boat an easier option would be a Corbie. When you buy the drawings, you get a comprehensive build manual that includes the rig. Further to that SLEC who as you are an aeromodeller will know, laser cut the sections at a reasonable cost. I also have permission to produce kits for the Nighthawk design which is an all ply chined hull designed in New Zealand. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3320635-Plywood-IOM&highlight=nighthawk The boat is going well by all accounts.
