September 12, 20223 yr This is thinking ahead … as to options retirement in a few years time, and time for research, saving up, and considering all options. question this seems disloyal to U.K. IOM producers but does anyone have experience of importing IOMs from other parts of the world? I am looking round the whole field, where as part of me just says Britpop and be done. have you bought the whole package or just hull from abroad and then purchased mast and rigging in U.K.? ( I thought I read… but might be wrong One producer is offering Cats sails, seems madness to have them made here, ship to Australia and then back again.) so experience of this whole process most welcome. Downunder .... importing new IOMs from NZ,UK, Spain and Croatia is the norm and either option of hull/fin/rudder or complete kit including rigs are common.

There was a time not so long ago when numerous builders were supporting and filling local fleets there, as well as exporting sought after designs at or near the top of world events. As it’s all about importing there now with few if any local builders offering top end designs, can I ask what happened?? Now to the question raised by Stephen Where the UK and Australia may have once had the lions share in design and build, there are now a small number of other manufacturers from wider fields offering top end products. If looking to buy from Europe over buying local, you can thank brexiteers for adding a few extra hurdles into your process. If looking to buy further afield (say NZ or Brazil), you can expect an import duty there of some kind. In short there is no easy answer and some form of duty may be imposed on imports. The other option would be to buy local, but sadly that seems to be following the Australian pattern with very few top line manufacturers left here also. Which takes us all back to the Question posed to Womble as to what happened…?

We exported one of our top designers/builders to the UK in the name of love (tic) and another that I know told me he stopped building as there is no money in building IOMs. That's why I asked who is building them in Australia as apart from the ones from Mirage or Plan B or the AKA which are locally designed and produced there aren't that many options. Happy to hear who @Stephen Bmay be considering I'm lucky enough to have an older but still highly competitive 2014 Craig Smith built IOM that BG just sent me new sails for but also have a Venti on order from Pepe in Spain as a future upgrade after considering a few locals and not being able to order a V11, get a Britpop quickly due to it's popularity and not wanting to join the masses with a K2.
