6 Metre setup

As the new owner of a Ravenna is any body able to give me the basic setup for no 1 rig.  do not seem to be able to get a good up wind setting at all. I either point well and go slowly or point lower and go a bit quicker but either way getting left behind.

look carefully at your jib slot this is often the problem and look at your set up in respect of the others you are sailing against, in general on my Ravenna I have the main around one fingers width off the centre line the jib slot at 3 fingers and the mast vertical, this gives me a set up with slight weather helm which I like and seems to work for me. You do need to make careful adjustments and note down what works in what conditions, for example I move my mast to give a slight forward lean in stronger winds which helps stop or slow down the broaching, be very careful about use of the rudder it is the commonest cause of slow boats , using it to much in normal circumstances you should be able to tack with less than 10 degrees of rudder movement.

I have to agree with Mike but will add mine needs far more twist in both sails than looks correct.

Also, my mast could do with coming forward a bit for any sort of breeze. Unfortunately, that is not possible without major surgery so I have to put up with far too much weather helm and too much held rudder to compensate.

Shouldn't that be forward a bit?  Weather helm is caused by the sail plan's centre of effort being behind the hydrodynamic centre so you need to move the sails forward to reduce the tendency to luff up.  Or have it got it wrong?

My own boat (not a 6 metre BTW) is driving me mad because it balances nicely when close hauled but develops vast amounts of weather helm on a reach and broaches at the drop of a hat.  Any suggestions for a cure gratefully  received.

to cure the broaches most of the Chisum boats had a mast step at  their base were the mast could be inclined more forward or aft this is all I do with mine but definitely to reduce the broach the centre of effort must move forward

I to purchased a second hand Revanna that had the same chacteristics, the boat was a dog.

I sought advise  from all and sundry to no  avail, the boat was still a dog.

In desparation I moved the center of lateral resistance aft a long way, and increased the area of resistance

The thickness of my fin was 28mm it is now 18mm (current nat. champions sister boat is 13mm)

The new fin was fabricated from ply wood and fits into the original fin casing, I am on the third iteration

A larger rudder was fitted

Lead was redesigned to leave one vortex rather than two

The boat now behaves as you would expect
