  1. I use an ARS 808 in my Ravenna
  2. There’s certainly something Australian about the pictures…
  3. I would strongly suggest you spend some time with Nigel Barrow’s blog. Most of it may not be directly aimed at beginners but it is packed with information and advice especially about IOMs. Buy him a coffee*!
  4. Thanks JT!
  5. Daft question but I couldn’t find anything in the rules… do sail numbers have to be black? I was hoping to use red…
  6. Thank you.
  7. Anyone want to discuss? The main practical change appears to to allow a second rig which I can see the sense in. The rest appear to be technical changes which are presumably required and won’t make much practical difference. two questions I have what is ERS terminology? who is qualified, equipped and prepared to measure 6 metres?
  8. Thanks for all your help on Sunday Rob, much appreciated - Stan
  9. I am also entered - see you there
  10. Another clue? The pot lid. The sails on the boat have number 36.
  11. It shall be in my hands in the next few days so we’ll see…
  12. More pics. Is it a Dann?
  13. Downbytheriver replied to Gary Dickens's topic in IOM
This is my vane 36 - simple system. I think on a IOM it is quicker to change the whole rig though.
  14. Taking Darin’s question first… What attracts me to an event is knowing that the underfoot conditions are sound, that access is reasonably straightforward and that I will have mates there. Poole would have been perfect for me (and yes ok it is my home club too) but I broke my shoulder the four days before it started. I go to events because they are fun - I’d love to do well but if I don’t make a fool of myself, I’ll be happy. why don’t I go to more? They need to be within a get there and back within a day distance (which for me means not much beyond Brum) and sadly there seem to be few events near the south coast (yes thanks Gosport and Poole). We do a have a plan to travel further so hopefully that will happen. Can I just say thanks to those clubs that do organise events - I don’t think I’ve ever been to a bad one.
  15. Useful. Thank you - my understanding is enhanced, if far from complete!
  16. I have purchased a couple of vane yachts in order to have a go at this part of the hobby. I have a Vane A and a Vane 36R - both beauties of “a certain age” and both equipped with rather lovely vane systems… which I have no clue about! In fairness to the vendor he has said that he will help me out if I turn up at Gosport on vane 36 day (which I will!) but I’m just trying to get ahead of the game. Attached are a few relevant pictures. Is there any resource that can get me started with understanding these glorious objects and how to use them? We are most interested initially in the 36R…
  17. The whole point of the “you tack” hail is that the hailing boat believes that the other boat has room to tack and still avoid a collision.
  18. Wow there’s a very ugly redundant apostrophe in the very first paragraph. otherwise, are we getting anywhere with this?
  19. Probably! I’ve printed 2 and registered them both - first one to learn, second one to perfect and I will print a third if required (or should I stick to heavy boats Steve?)
  20. You are right - my shed contains the fourth iteration of DF65 668! However the IOM is not just a MYA class but an international class and is not one design.
  21. To save messing about with sail numbers, get a personal sail number - all my rigs have the same numbers on them. I think a new hull is going to be a new boat and hence a new hull number - it would certainly need measuring.
  22. Depends how mini you want but the usual source is Elvstrom explains the racing rules - plenty of old editions on eBay, just make sure the copy still has them - example - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126254592927?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=3AYnHIqjRDG&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=uO_yALY3QR-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
  23. And finally… Measurement. Doesn’t apply to me, I go out of my way to get everything ship shape and Bristol fashion, but a lot of club racers don’t. Not only sails, which is a fairly straightforward thing to rectify but how often are certificates checked at club racing? If the club tolerates it there could be whole fleets of unmeasured boats. This will stop anyone going to opens. Sounds easily rectified? You try to get a six metre measured at the moment… we need to make sure that every class has a suitable provision for measuring.
