IOM Marblehead speed differential

Featured Replies

At the 3RRYC club in Rickmansworth we are discussing ways of running the two classes together to give the smaller MH fleet more sailing days. Our area of the lake is roughly 60m x 40m with plenty of bouys to do zig zag courses. If we start the MHs 30 seconds earlier can anyone hazard a guess as to how many laps we might get in before we get finish line congestion.

Any other ways of doing it gratefully received.

Thanks

Trevor

Have you considered a pursuit style race format? Stagger start the slowest boats or least experienced skippers up to the fastest boats by type experienced skippers over a set course or time and first boat over the line is the winner etc.

Interesting but I don’t think we have the race officer skills to operate such a system.

We run a pursuit one off race at our local sailing club. Everyone knows what order the boats cross the start line. Stop watch and airhorn to time and signal each start. Might be worth trying with a handful of keen to try skippers to see if it’s workable

For many years we had a situation in Germany where the 10R class was suffering in numbers. The fleer sizes did not justify organizing events for them.

To keep the class alive, we organized races for IOM and 10R at the same date and venue so that the host had enough entries to make it worth the clubs efforts.

However, we didn't race them in a single fleet bus raced with alternating starts. This gave each fleet a brief pause and chance to watch the others sailing and act as observers for the PRO. Watching 10R sail did spark interest with some IOM skippers whohva invested in a 10R (myself included) and the fleet has grown since to allow for a dedicated 10R circuit and national championship with decent numbers.
