March 1, 20251 yr I am a new owner and I have not been able to find a bow bumper to masthead measurement for the Kantwo design, could someone help?. I also have one of John Gill’s shroud tension meters, what sort of tension should I be putting on them? I’d be grateful for any clues. Philip Waring
March 2, 20251 yr Hi Philip I "calibrated" my tension meter by hanging a bunch of cans (*) on a length of shroud wire and found that around 8 cans was my maximum IOM shroud tension, and in general 6 cans did the trick. This was when a can was 450g, around 1lb. So, tension between 2.7kg and 3.6kg for my setup. (*) Started with soup, then changed to baked beans.
March 2, 20251 yr I have a JG shroud tension meter, on single strand wire I sail with between 20 - 24. I don't bother with what actual tension this is in Kgs or whatever, but use the number as my guide. I use Catsails on a PG mast with 55mm spreaders - hull is Sedici. I find those settings necessary to keep the mast in column for setting the main up to operate as I want downwind in approx 7-10knots of breeze. I don't adjust the shrouds once set, just change fore and aft rig tension to suit conditions and achieve the desired mast rake. If you are unable to obtain an accurate measurement for bumper to masthead (or wherever - jib hoist is the favourite), for an A rig I have found 1 degree rake aft to be a good starting point.
