January 4, 20233 yr Hi im new to this site and wondered if there’s an idiots guide to setting sail an rig I sail a one metre home built model billy
January 4, 20233 yr Lots of good reference information in the MYA knowledge base, worth looking for the 2009 Handbook in the Newcomers section, or there are a number of articles in the back issues of The Acquaint. Knowledge Base – Model Yachting Association Great Britain (mya-uk.org.uk)
January 4, 20233 yr This link is to Brad Gibsons’s excellent guide to a basic setting up process for an IOM. I understand it works well for pretty much any design of IOM. http://www.bgsailsanddesign.com/uploads/7/0/6/9/70698521/bg_sails_rig_tuning_iom.pdf It’s very well put together. For me it’s the sort of document I need to revisit frequently because it covers such a lot of information. One of the key points is getting the mast vertical as a starting point. This is tricky because when your boat’s on its stand, it’s difficult to see whether the design waterline is actually horizontal. I dealt with this by putting the stand on a smooth level floor and then moved the boat forwards and backwards to trim it until the bottom of the stern and forefoot were exactly the same height off the floor. I then checked the mast with a spirit level. Not perfect, but it provides a good baseline to work on.
January 4, 20233 yr Hi Billy know the feeling…. And have spent most of the summer looking for hints and tips. This is good https://www.mya-uk.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/20_IOMTuning_2013_2.pdf as it appears to feature a boat similar to mine rather than the latest offering. as Martin says, upright mast, and I was told the the front edge of the keel should be upright, and therefore in a stand with spirit level against this edge, you can adjust to get the boat as it should be in the water. Then mast upright from there. but if I am wrong, happy to be corrected
January 4, 20233 yr Author Stephen many thanks for your invaluable guidance and link which I shall endeavour to put to good use. Thank you Billy
January 8, 20233 yr William There is an excellent article on the Broads Radio Yacht Club web site on IOM Tuning, by Peter Sutton (not to be confused with The Norfolk Broads Yacht Club). It is one that I found useful when introduced to model yacht racing a number of years ago. http://www.broadsradioyachtclub.co.uk/tuningandtechtest.html Raymond Crisp BRYC Member
