6M Owners,

Following on from the results of the class ballot held earlier this year, Graham Bantock, MYA Technical Officer, has revised the 6M class documents appertaining to the rules, measurement and certification of our 6M boats.

These documents are now available to use on the MYA 6M class website page.

Below is an overview from Graham of the process to date and how it can proceed going forward. Please pay special attention to the final paragraph regarding the way certification can be implemented and by whom. I would like to thank Graham for his work on this. We now have a firm rule base with greater clarity that will take us forward for years to come.

I hope we will see a further wave of boatbuilding and refurbishment over the winter with more measured and certified 6 Metres on the water at events up and down the UK.

	Shaun Holbeche

	Class Captain.

The MYA website page for the 6M class has been updated with the revised class rules, certificate and check list which completes the work required to bring the class rules fully up to date after the ballot of 6M COG members.

The 2017 version of the class rules contained many errors and omissions that needed correction and needed bringing into line with the current ERS and other related technical rules. As an emergency measure an interim version was issued without consultation with the owners. In 2025 a ballot of the owners was conducted to establish their preferences concerning the class rules and the current class rules are listed here. If you participated, thanks for your input to this.

Measurers and owners should know that nothing concerning the way in which boats are certified has changed except that boats, except their sails, can be certified by a class measurer who is not an Official Measurer. Sails continue to be certified by an Official Measurer (anyone listed as a Sail Measurer on the MYA website).

Just a quick thankyou to all at the Dartmoor MBC who hosted us at the 6m Nationals.

Whilst the TP52 (with Dave Hollom designed modified keel) was pounding the waves around the IOW, our 6m's were getting flattened on Dartmoor!! BUT we were made very welcome by all the sailing members of the Dartmoor Mode Boat Club, who have acheived great things at their "pond on the hill".

They are to be congratulated for their enterprize and hard work in jetty building, clubhouse, toilets, raised sailing platform, and of course thanks to the ladies for the hot drinks, cream tea on sat and bacon rolls on Sunday morning, all done on a primus stove!!!

This was my 3rd visit to Dartmoor, each one as enjoyable as the one before. If you get a chance to go and race there I wholehartedly reccomend you go.

Thanks again Kieth and all your members.

I am currently building a planked hull using the John Lewis Petrel design drawing as a basis. I am not intending it to be a serious racing model, just something different for social sailing. I am planning to make it dual control. radio or vane so I will modify the rudder arrangement to have a skeg and rudder rather than a balanced rudder as the design. My main questions relate to the keel and ballast. I plan to use a Sails etc wide delta planform ballast weight which seems to be available at about the right weight of 9 kg. Should I keep the design keel profile, which is quite 'fat' at the bottom or would there be any advantage in making the keel thinner but retaining the same chord length? The 6M website suggests a keel bolted through the hull to deck level but I am considering fitting an internal keel box instead - any views on which is best?

Those that missed yesterday missed a treat, we had cake, wine, gymnastics displays at the second windward mark and an M shaped course that was strangely satisfying to race on.

The former Miss Kerridge, David’s daughter was the OOD ably assisted by her children. This was her first model yacht event to officiate at, but it was obvious that she has a good knowledge of sailing in general if not the outside assistance rule ;0) and I for one look forward to next years event. More of the same please.

My lockdown project boat is progressing well, thanks to a fair amount of input from members.

Bought as a planked, scaled down, Moby Dick design and being hacked about by me to make a sort of "what if" 6Metre yacht. What could a 6M be if not quite so constrained by sail area, keel depth and hull contorting measurement rules. NOT intended as any criticism of the 6M, which is a lovely class to look at, just an exercise in what could be done.

I have removed 0.5Kg of internal structures /deck. The original fin, rudder & skeg and 7Kg internal ballast also lopped off. A new c/f keel and rim tab plus an old One Metre rudder are the new external appendages. The new deck has ended up looking like a Swiss cheese as I thought of additional areas that may require access as things progress. A pattern has been made for a 7Kg ballast, which is intended to interact with the trim tab and, hopefully, the hull to increase effectiveness. For this reason the main fin section is just a simple aerofoil .

Thinking of sail plan now and aiming for 0.8-0.9 sq M. Maintaining the same ratios as typical 6M, also One Metre; which is interesting. Really want to go high aspect, but aware of keeping a sensible mast height. Substantial roach in order here, like the Merlin Rocket main.

Here is the main point of this missive. Does any one have any ideas on the project that they would like to see ? Any comments on rig that could give me a steer on configuration.

Thinking carbon mast, maybe in two parts. No spreaders. Fractional rig with aforementioned main. I like sleeved, fully battened mains though.

All comments / suggestions welcome and thanks to all who have already guided me.

Hi All, I am just checking to see if all of the six metre owners in the UK have been receiving the emails via Mailchimp from the COG via myself, if you want to receive these emails( a few a year) and you are not at present receiving them please contact me directly with contact details (email and Telephone if possible) club yacht design and number, if you only have some details and not a yacht as yet please let me know and I will contact you directly.

Hopefully we will be out on the water and racing sometime this year, keep cheerful (not easy) keep well (even harder) and see you all soon.
