The venue for the final 2009 Scottish IOM Travellers event was moved from the Aberdeen to Buchanness Club due to the presence of weed.
Despite the extra distance to travel a good fleet of 12 boats came north to take advantage of the good winds that traditionally blow at the Peterhead reservoir.
Scottish skippers were joined by John Taylor who although not able to count in the final results wanted the chance to race one of his new Squiggle designs. Five skippers started with Starting
Advantages as per the prescriptions given in the 2009 Scottish District Sailing Instructions.
Initially the wind was westerly around 10 mph and skippers rigged their No1 Rigs but even before the first race they had to change down to No2 Rig as the wind continued to strengthen. A long
windward leeward course was set with 2 rounds which was challenging due to the gusting wind, unpredictable wind shifts and lots of choppy water at the leeward mark.
From the start of the event local skipper Ali Law with his Pikanto mastered the conditions and by lunchtime had pulled out a significant advantage. He was pushed at times by John Taylor who was
getting to grips with his new Squiggle and by Robert Brown from Levenhall also sailing a Pikanto. Several skippers with their 20 second starting advantage also featured at the front of the fleet
with Brian Robertson being the first to drop back to Scratch after 3 top three positions in the first three races. During the morning, as the wind increased, some skippers opted to change down
to their No3 rigs to cope with the difficult downwind conditions and by lunchtime all the fleet was racing with their No3 Rigs. For some it was a rare occasion to try the smallest rig and it
took a couple of races for them to find the right tune.
After the lunch break the wind eased slightly allowing all the fleet to sail with their No 2 Rig and these more manageable conditions resulted in closer racing. Three other skippers with
starting advantages managed to finish in the top three in the afternoon and dropped back to scratch proving that the new system of handicapping was working well.
After 13 races, Ali Law with 7 race wins came home as a worthy winner followed by John Taylor who did not feature on the final scoresheet since his brand new boat had not been officially
measured. Second place was taken by Robert Brown who had a series of consistently good finishes over the day and third place went to Bill Reid on countback after a tie with Brian Robertson.
Brian was awarded a prize in recognition of his good performance in the difficult conditions during the morning session.
This concludes the 3 race 2009 IOM Travellers Series where events were organized jointly by the West, Central and Northern clubs. Clubs are now looking forward to their winter series in
preparation for the 2010 program of events.
