A very strong entry of 23 skippers assembled on the morning of 6th June 2009 for the second Scottish Travellers series event for One Metre yachts. The racing was organised
by the Levenhall Radio Yacht Club and took place on their water at Levenhall Links to the east of Edinburgh. The wind was from the northeast allowing race officer Richard
Ennos to set a long windward /leeward course that incorporated a hitch mark at the windward end and a gate at the leeward end. Wind strength varied from comfortable number
one suit to mid number two suit, and this variation necessitated a number of changes of rigs throughout the day.
The size of the entry meant that racing was conducted using two fleets with a four boat promotion/demotion. Six skippers sailed with a 20 second starting advantage, though this only applied in the seeding races and when they were competing in the B fleet. The fleet began in number one suit. Seeding races were won by Ian Dundas from Aberdeen sailing a Widget, and local skipper Tom Milne from Levenhall sailing his new Lintel. In the next two races Alistair Law sailing a Pikanto, and Richard Rowan with his Italiko, an earlier Bantock design, took the first two places. However Richard Yemm and Robert Brown from the home club also fared well. Richard Yemm, in his first season of radio yachting, was sailing his own very wide beam design ‘Buffy’ that makes a TS2 look positively anorexic. The design clearly relished the conditions at the top end of number one suit. During the B heat of race four there was a marked increase in wind strength leading to loss of control on downwind legs, and the fleet then changed down to second suit. In the subsequent A heat Richard Rowan had a problem with his jib fouling, and the resulting demotion to B fleet, from which he found it hard to escape, put him out of contention for the event. After lunch Will Davies from Levenhall, sailing an Italiko, came to the fore. On the windward legs he appeared to be able to sail much closer than the opposition while retaining good boat speed. Scottish Racing Secretary Collin McGinnis snatched a victory in race 7, and Ian Dundas won his first A heat in race 8, closely followed by clubmate Steve Taylor sailing his wooden Zig Zag. However Alistair Law, who had been sailing steadily and in quiet mode throughout, showed his dominance of the event by winning the last two races. |
