The Scottish R6M District Championship took place at Barshaw Park Paisley on 18/10/2009.
Unfortunately there was a poor turnout with only 6 boats entering on a day where the weather conditions suited the class. Racing started at 10.30am with a tricky westerly wind and Race Officer John Mason set a standard course of triangle and sausage which proved to be very tricky coming up to the windward mark. Robert Rooney won the first race with his Revival followed closely by Gordon Allison in his Ravenna. There was tighter competition between Terry Allison, David Smith, John Gilchrist and Gerry Crawford for places. In the next few races, approaching the windward mark had to be rounded with quite some skill as the wind varied a great deal upon nearing it. Many skippers found themselves contacting the windward mark instead of rounding it with enough room. On one such occasion Robert Rooney tried to pinch his way round it too much only to collide with Gordon Allison resulting in damage to his foresail which enabled Gordon Allison to win the next 2 races. Both Terry Allison and David Smith continued to race closely for 3rd & 4th position. John Gilchrist managed to win one race with excellent sailing from a bad start, avoiding other battles, and finding the wind quickly to romp home by some distance from the rest of the fleet. Robert Rooney managed to quickly repair his boat and was soon back in a dual with Gordon Allison for the top places which was evenly matched before Gordon Allison also suffered damage to his rudder which left him unable to compete any further. A good days sailing was had by all and racing finished at 3.00pm. |
