IOM Scottish Wooden Hull Championship 2005
Brechin - 28th May 2005
|
Eleven skippers turned out at Brechin on a foggy and drizzly Saturday
morning to sail in the second IOM Scottish Wooden Hull Championship. The race officer for
the regatta was Colin Brown from the Buchanness club assisted by two members
of the Brechin club. The wind at the start was coming in from the NE at
about five mph and was very variable in strength and direction. As we have come
to expect, variable wind strength and direction at Brechin makes setting a course very difficult for the RO.
It was extremely pleasant to see two yachts designed and built by
skippers Ian Dundas and Richard Ennos. It's at the very core of this
championship to build your own wooden yacht and race it. Both skippers did
extremely well right from the off.
Ian put his stamp on the regatta by winning the
first race and never looked like losing with a final tally of 4 wins and a worst result of seventh. Richard Ennos sailed a consistent event with one win to his credit. Alistair Law, having
borrowed a boat from Richard, took a long time to get to grips with it and managed only
two wins for the day. He ended up finishing just one point behind Richard. Boyd Baird won four races but could never get consistency into his
sailing and finished in fourth position.
It was a superb day's sailing and as usual the "comfort" breaks were
in fantastic surroundings and in great comfort. A very well run regatta, with no protests and a very good spirit among the skippers. This
is an event not to be missed next year and every encouragement should be
given to skippers to have a go at building and sailing.
