Paisley Model Yacht Club

Based in Barshaw Park, Paisley

History

Model yachts have been sailed in Barshaw park by PMYC members for over 100 years. The club celebrated its centenary in 1996,  with the first running of a special event – the Karachi cup.   This event, a challenge match between Scotland and England sailed with 6Metre class model yachts allows the best skippers from both sides of the border to compete as teams.

Classes of Yacht

Radio 1 Metres

The 1m yacht is exactly 1m long, and has three sets of sails to suit various wind conditions. It is the most popular international class, with very strict rules that limit the development potential. It is easy to sail, and gives fast and furious racing. The yachts are made of fibreglass or wood, with fins and rudders from carbon fibre or wood. A two channel radio is used controlling the rudder and the sails using a sail winch. New yachts cost around £450,  but there are lots of competitive second hand yachts around for £200 to £350 ready to race.

Radio 6 Metres

The model 6m is a more traditional type of yacht with a very graceful appearance. The class is governed by a rating rule that measures various aspects of the hull and uses the result to set the sail area.

Racing

Radio control allows several yachts to race together, using rules identical to full size yacht racing rules.

Typically a race is a triangle and sausage course around marks in the pond, with a start and finish line between two marks.

Races are started with a countdown tape, and skippers often ‘discuss’ rules as the race progresses.
