From David Smith (Secretary/Treasurer)  28 April 2005

Dear Sailing Addicts,

April has been a fairly busy month - but wait for May!

The second round of the 2005 Club Championship for IOM Yachts took place on 3rd April with a creditable turnout; again a good day's sailing.

Sunday 10th April saw the Scott's of Greenock Trophy contested at Greenock with a strong turnout of PMYC members.  Graham Campbell won closely followed by last year's winner, Robert Rooney.  Many thanks are due to Hugh Shields and the members of the Greenock Model Yacht and Power Boat Club for their welcome and efficient organisation of the event (especially the pies and sausage rolls).  They also organised a good strong breeze on dry day in a wet period.  The only possible criticism was there was no sun!

There was a full page report on the event in the Greenock Telegraph of Wednesday 13th April with several good shots of the yachts (and their skippers) - very good publicity for our activities!

The second round of the Club Championship for R6m Yachts took place on Sunday 17th April with rather less publicity.

Wednesday 20th April saw the hard core group of mid-week sailors sidelined and shanghaied by the Annual Departmental Challenge for Strathclyde 70 yachts designed and built by groups of students from the Department of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering at the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde.  Twelve yachts were out on the water for this event and got through twelve races under the watchful eyes of Hugh Shields as Race Officer and John Mathieson & Drew Taylor as Line Judges.  The Departmental winner from the last two years again finished in front but was beaten in two races by last year's best new boat who took second place overall.  Third place went to the best of this year's seven new boats who also beat the winners in two races.  We had a gloriously sunny afternoon with plenty of wind - great fun!

I want to draw your attention to the Club and Open Events taking place in May - please mark these in your diaries;  personal organisers;  (even paint them on the sides of your boats so that you remember!)

The third round of the Club Championship for IOM Yachts is on Sunday 8th May.

We are hosting the second event of the Scottish Travellers Series for IOM Yachts on Saturday 14th May here at Barshaw Park. Let's have a good turnout.  Entry as usual to the Club Secretary,  preferably using the Scottish District entry form available on the Scottish District Website but telephone or e-mail entries will be accepted.

As usual we will be sailing in accordance with the MYA Standard Sailing Instructions but to help those travelling long distances the Skipper's Briefing will be at 10h00 with first race scheduled for 10h15 and no race will start after 16h00.  Remember to bring your MYA membership cards and Measurement Certificates.

Sunday 22nd May brings the Windermere Plaque for R6m Yachts.  Let's have as good a turn out as we achieved for the Ice Breaker in February and at Greenock in April.

Anyone with a Wooden Hulled IOM should be at Brechin on Saturday 28th May for the Scottish Wooden Hull IOM Championships - full details from Brechin.

The final event in May is the third round of the Club Championship for R6m Yachts on Sunday 29th May.

Anyone free on a Wednesday afternoon is welcome to turn up for some sailing - a hard core group including John Mathieson, Hugh Shields and others are regularly found on the water.  Now that the evenings are lengthening and the days warming (a bit) the sailing may be moving from afternoon to early evening - speak to John or Hugh about their plans.

Good Sailing to you all and please support your club and open events.

Regards,

David
