North East Clubs   2009  Late Series

Summary report

There were 9 participating skippers in the three event North East Clubs winter series held over October to December 2009. Overall turnouts were lower than in previous years as a result of the cancellation of the event at Brechin in October due to severe weather but two excellent, closely contested events were held at Buchanness and Aberdeen.

The Buchanness event was held in blustery 25mph choppy conditions with many skippers experiencing gear failures. Ian Dundas from Aberdeen with his Elliott Widget won comfortably ahead of Brian Robertson sailing a Topiko and Bill Reid sailing a Stealth.

The Aberdeen event was a complete contrast with extremely light winds and cold air.  The racing was very close and a cool head was needed to stay ahead around the course. SteveTaylor from Aberdeen sailing his wooden Zig Zag excelled in the conditions and finished a point clear of David Loomes from Paisley with Ian Dundas in third.

Following on from last years trial,  club scores were introduced in addition to the normal individual scores. The experience of club scores seems to be positive and has the advantage that more experienced skippers are coaching other club skippers and passing on their experience. The rule “no outside assistance” has been dropped in order to encourage coaching.

The Club Scores saw Buchanness coming out on top:
