With the whole of the country gripped in arctic conditions, and with treacherous frozen roads throughout the North East of Scotland it was very surprising that Peterhead reservoir was ice
free and even more surprising that a group of 6 skippers turned up for the traditional icebreaker event to launch the 2010 R/C sailing calendar.
With the small entry it was decided to run a team racing event rather than the normal fleet racing with Aberdeen Club against the local Buchanness Club.
As is usual for Peterhead, there was a good breeze close to the top of No1 Rig and there were enough wind shifts around the course to bring out the best of team racing tactics and to test
one's knowledge of the racing rules. Despite the closeness of the racing there was a great spirit amongst skippers and rule infringements were amicably sorted out on the water.
It became clear that the teams had to work hard together to win races with many races decided by a single point.
Aberdeen Club were first to get going in the morning session with good results but after the customary excellent hot lunch provided by the Buchanness ladies the local skippers faired better in
the afternoon.
At the end of the day, after 14 races, Aberdeen ran out worthy winners 10/4.
All participants thoroughly enjoyed the day despite the freezing weather. The experience of team racing was considered to be positive and many skippers are now looking forward to doing more
team racing in the 2010 season.
