General information on Fleetwood and the surrounding area can be found at the following websites: Wyre Borough Council Tourist Information Contact the Fleetwood Club fleetwood@mya-uk.org.uk The race organisers are determined to do their utmost to provide a full week's sailing and to provide fair racing on a well known model yachting lake that can provide some of the most ideal conditions for sailing. Of course we cannot control the weather and this lake can produce a mirror finish just like any other! However, being next to the sea on a very exposed corner of the Lancashire coast, it generally experiences good winds. The prevailing westerly winds can blow very hard indeed, as shown on the images of the lake attached. In order to have good sailing when northerly or southerly winds are blowing across the model yachting lake, the Fleetwood Club has negotiated the use of the large boating lake adjacent, which will allow better courses in these wind directions. The control area for this lake is a 9 metre wide concrete platform at water level in the south-west corner, not far from the clubhouse, as shown that on the plan on the images sheet. Further details will be posted on the 2006 World Championship section of the MYA website in due course. For those who have not been to Fleetwood before, it is a holiday town located on the southern shores of Morecambe Bay. In the 1830s Fleetwood, at the mouth of the River Wyre, became a vital part of a new transport system to Scotland. At that time trains could not get up the steep hills of the Lake District to the north, so the small fishing village became the northern terminus for trains with passengers transferring to paddle steamers for the last part of their journey north. The town plan, several buildings and a magnificent U-shaped hotel were designed by the Victorian architect, Decimus Burton, most famous for his buildings at Kew in London. His vision was for tree-lined streets radiating outward from the Mount, a monument on the biggest of the sand dunes on which the town was built. See images sheet. Without moving from Fleetwood you can experience the breathtaking sunsets, the unique atmosphere of a market day, museum, gardens, trams, promenade, ships docking and miles of sandy beach. Fleetwood is also an excellent base from which to explore Lancashire, whether it's the bright lights and bustle of Blackpool, beautiful coastal areas or the beauty and tranquillity of the rolling hills. There are many attractions including the special ambience of ancient hamlets, the outstanding landscape of the Forest of Bowland less than an hour's drive away, the staggering beauty of the Yorkshire Dales or the Lake District and hundreds of miles of walks and cycle routes across spectacular countryside.
